About Agios Nikolaos & East

The east of Crete is less dramatic than the west but more relaxed, with better beaches for families. Agios Nikolaos is a lakeside town built around Voulismeni Lake, a circular lake connected to the sea by a narrow channel, with restaurants lining the waterfront. Spinalonga Island (EUR 8 entry + EUR 12 boat from Elounda or Plaka) is the former leper colony that inspired Victoria Hislop's novel "The Island" - the Venetian fortress and the abandoned colony buildings are atmospheric and moving. Vai Palm Beach on the northeast coast has Europe's largest natural palm forest backing onto a sandy cove (arrive early in summer, parking fills by 10 AM). The Lasithi Plateau is the high mountain plain with traditional windmills and the Dikteon Cave (EUR 6) where, according to mythology, Zeus was born. The east has gentler tourism than the west, more resort hotels, and fewer independent travellers.

Spinalonga Island Boat Trip

Spinalonga is a small island in the Mirabello Gulf, most famous as the last active leper colony in Europe (operated 1903-1957) and the setting for Victoria Hislop's novel "The Island." The Venetian fortress (built 1579) dominates the island, and the abandoned colony buildings - houses, a church, a hospital, a marketplace - are hauntingly atmospheric. Boats depart from Elounda (EUR 12, 15 min) or Plaka (EUR 10, 10 min). Entry to the island EUR 8. Allow 1.5-2 hours on the island. Go early morning or after 3 PM to avoid the cruise ship crowds.

Palazzo cafe bar

Palazzo cafe bar

Cafe

Right on the waterfront at Akti Pangkalou, Palazzo is the kind of place where you sit down for one freddo cappuccino at around EUR 3.50 and somehow stay for two hours watching the boats. The terrace wraps around a corner that catches the afternoon light perfectly, and the crowd is an easy mix of locals and people who clearly came back on purpose. Order early if you want one of the low seats by the railing.

cafe Du Lac bar

cafe Du Lac bar

Cafe

Cafe Du Lac sits right on the edge of Lake Voulismeni, and yes, the view really is as good as people say, especially with a cold freddo espresso around EUR 3 in your hand at breakfast. The tables almost hang over the water, and on a calm morning the lake reflects everything back at you in a way that makes it hard to leave. It gets busy by mid-morning, so the sweet spot is showing up just after 9.
