Right on the waterfront at Akti Pangkalou, Palazzo is the kind of place where you sit down for one freddo cappuccino at around EUR 3.50 and somehow stay for two hours watching the boats. The terrace wraps around a corner that catches the afternoon light perfectly, and the crowd is an easy mix of locals and people who clearly came back on purpose. Order early if you want one of the low seats by the railing.

Spinalonga is a small island in the Mirabello Gulf, most famous as the last active leper colony in Europe (operated 1903-1957) and the setting for Victoria Hislop's novel "The Island."
