The big Christmas market on Vörösmarty Square, from mid-November to the last day of December. Stalls sell handmade crafts, mulled wine and chimney cake, and the food stands serve goulash and roast pork. Skip weekend evenings if you can't stand crowds; weekday afternoons are easier.

The promenade along the Pest bank between the Chain Bridge and Elisabeth Bridge, with the castle, the Bastion and Gellért Hill across the water. Best near dusk, when the lights come on. Skip it in wind and rain; Váci utca runs a block inland.

A short street running from Vörösmarty Square toward the river, lined with smaller shops and cafés. Skip it if you're not shopping; it's a link, not a sight.

The Budapest Eye on Erzsébet tér, a big wheel with closed cabins and a few slow turns over the centre. Best at night, when the bridges are lit. Skip it if you've done Gellért Hill or the Basilica dome; the views from those are better.

The square at the north end of Váci utca, with a statue of the poet Mihály Vörösmarty and Café Gerbeaud on one side. From mid-November to New Year's Eve it fills with the city's best-known Christmas market. Out of season, skip it if you're in a hurry; it's pleasant, not more.
